Hugo Jansen: pioneer in organic sweet corn

Hugo Jansen is a pioneer in organic sweet corn cultivation. He has been active as a grower and processor of organic sweet corn for more than 35 years. He is one of the early entrepreneurs who committed fully to organic farming.

What makes him special is that Hugo Jansen not only became a grower, but also organised the processing and sales of organic sweet corn himself. In doing so, he built a chain from cultivation to processing — quite unusual in the early years of organic farming.

His company is based in Ossendrecht, where he specialised in organic sweet corn. Research by Wageningen University & Research shows that other farmers grew sweet corn for him, demonstrating his crucial role in the development of the Dutch organic chain.

In short:

  1. 01.Started organic farming more than 35 years ago.
  2. 02.One of the first organic sweet corn growers in the Netherlands.
  3. 03.Combined cultivation, processing and sales in one company.
  4. 04.Built a strong network of organic growers from Ossendrecht.

Strategic sowing & harvesting

Founder Hugo Jansen decides together with our growers when to sow. This happens in a logical sequence, so that harvesting can later be done strategically with minimal travel and time loss. Hugo determines together with quality officer Loran van Weele when the moment has come to start the harvest. That depends mainly on the colour and size of the cobs.

A proven process…

After removing the leaves, the cobs are cut, washed and deep-frozen. They are then vacuum-packed and sterilised according to a validated process.
